the Parksmen started in the early 60's out of the Little Park and never left there.

Comments

Only 2 "gangs" roamed Bowdion street in the late 50's and they were the "RED DEVIL'S and the "SAINTS". The Red Devil's hung around Ronan Park and Bowdion and Draper street and the Saints came from Hamilton and Clarkson street area. Later on they came together as the Dorchester Lyon's club football team and then Eddie's Giants and so on and so on.Some of the Red Devil's and Saints started hanging around the little park in the late 50's when there interest's went from sports to girls.

Anyone remember the kids down the DOT HOUSE... they had their own sort of gang and there were atleast 30 or more of them.

PARKSMEN STORY _ POST FROM BILLY BRATTON'S BOOK: One afternoon when I was about eight years old, a half dozen of us were out playing ball in front of the Edward Southworth School when we caught the attention of a local gang called the Parksmen. Local kids, twelve-year-olds, they were the big neighborhood bullies, and they used to fight with another gang called the Red Raiders all the time. We'd been playing ball, and the Parksmen broke up the game and took us hostage. They put us on the front steps of the school and wouldn't let us go. They were much bigger than we were, so there was no chance of us fighting our way out. We were stuck. It started getting late. Four-thirty came and went, and they wouldn't let us go. Finally, they let their guard down and I ran home. "Where were you?" my father demanded. He and my mother weren't particularly worried about my safety--kids hung out in the streets all the time. What had him riled was that it was five o'clock and I had missed supper. There were rules--the family eats together was one of them--and I had broken one.

"The Parksmen held us hostage," I panted. "They wouldn't let us go.

They've still got some of the kids."

My father hopped up from the table, grabbed my arm, and off we went. He stormed up the hill to Edward Southworth. "We'll see about this," he muttered. I had to run to keep up.

I thought my father was the toughest guy who ever lived. He was a little guy, five foot eight, thin, about 130 pounds, but, boy, you didn't want to see him mad.

My friends were still huddled on the stone steps. They looked very glad to see us. The Parksmen were slouching in front of them, smoking cigarettes, on guard duty, a bunch of tough twelve-year-old boys. My dad walked right through the pack. He never laid a hand on them, he just put the fear of God in those kids.

"Who the hell do you think you are?"

The Parksmen backed off immediately. First, they fanned out in a semicircle, but my father gave them a look that told them he'd rip their heads off. Then they bolted. Our guys were free. That gang never bothered us again.

I don't know if my father has ever had a fight in his life, but he was a scrapper as a kid. His mother died young, and he and his four brothers were split up among the relatives. Somewhere along the line, my father developed the confidence that he could handle whatever came along.

You could tell in the way he carried himself. He never swaggered, but he didn't back down. In my parents' social circle, he was looked up to as the solid one, the good, hard-working, decent guy, the best at what he does, the rock, with a nice way about him. My sister and I were crazy about him.

NOW WHICH ONE OF YOU GUYS WERE PARKSMEN THAT DAY? COME ON - ADMIT IT. MY GUESS CIRCA 1955-1957?

Good book worth reading...

The best quote Jerry Bruno ever said was regarding his son Arthur. He was yelling at him for something he did and said " the best thing about you ran down my leg." Took me plenty of years to figure out what it meant, but I remember it clear as the day standing in his store.

Someone mentioned Copley Drug. I lived on Draper St. and remember going there to pick up my "PADS" when I was like 13. It was like a scene from Mission Impossible. After I bought them I'd stand inside the doorway until I saw that the light had changed and then I'd dash across the street and hide in the doorway of each store, making sure no one saw me with that "brown bag". Once I made it to the Draper St. corner I'd fly home. Thank God for superstores nowadays!

That story about Billy Bratton was funny. He hung out with my brother Lenny Brown and Lenny says that Billy was a real crybaby. He always wanted to be the commander of every war game that they played on the street. When he became famous, he would never acknowledge where he came from, "Hecla Street". He had a sister named "Patty". Anyone ever hear what happened to her? Another story about the little park. My father had a new white Impalain the mid 60's that he parked in front of the white church one night. It was stolen. Now which one of the Parkmen did it? Come clean...

Behind the Mighty Midget is where we would go in the morning to sneak our cigarettes before entering good ole St. Peters wondering if anybody reading this remembers joining me there. I remember a lot of us meeting there in the morning, to name a few Cocker, Gerry , Brian , Paul, Cindy, Deanna, Leanie and Carol. Any of you out there and are you going to this.

the best place to play halfball was at the mather school yard (white church side).we had an understanding with the fire house, that when they went out on a call we would make sure no-one broke in. they would have an understanding with the cops, not to bother us when we were playing halfball and drinking beers. of course this is or was unofficial. but we never really did get hassled by the cops when we played halfball. i remember mark mcdonough, robbie hassey, bobby(egghead)michaels, mark cloughety, richie leroy and me(cardar) hitting roofers. hassey twice. what a great game!!! i tried to introduce halfball here in arizona years ago. but i think they thought i was nuts, or the heat fried my brain, little did they know it was the drugs from the 70's i played basketball up at the 101 steps court. what ever happened to weasal. he was a good ball player.fancy.-later cardar

Does anyone remember Irving's at the corner of Hamilton and Bowdoin Street? We used to get our green knee socks and white Peter Pan blouses there. And the those Honey Dipped donuts were the best EVER. Me and Dianne Power got bagged in the 8th grade by Miss Thompson at recess. Inez got mad at us for sneaking in. We used to smoke behind the school on Coleman Street. Sister Francis bagged us by yelling out the third floor window and grabbing Theresa Crehan out of line when we came back from lunch. What a great site. My early years were on Rosseter & Olney St's. Pat & Mike Moorehouse, Marty & Peter Walsh, Bobby & Billy Joyce. My brother I believe was a Parksman, Richie Skinner(RIP).He married Joanne Murray. He was also in a band with John Taylor, Louie Risk, they were called "Heated Blood" they use to play the old summer concerts next to the First National in Fields Corner.Hope I got it right and someone remembers. At the Grover, met the gang from Corona St. Rick LaCivita, Billy Bulger, Manny Paula, the Clancy's. Paul "Okie" O'Connell from Longfellow St. still friends with them all to this day.Looking forward to the party, sounds great.Oh yea, had Mr. Bertazonni for woodworking at the Grover. Wally Skinner

I hope I don't hurt anyones feelings on the commitee but it seems like it would make more sense to have a DJ who could play all the songs that span such a vast amount of years and music, than having a band that plays a particular type of music. If we had a DJ people could request certain songs and it would be more nostalgic, but we could also have some of the wild stuff that's out there now. You are all doing a great job and I thank God for this website every day. I wish I was closer so I could take part in the plans. Do you know it still says Guess Book instead of Guest Book? I'll be sending some pictures as soon as my children show me how to do it.

I'm sure Kenny Murphy and Pat O'Rierdan remember her. She used to beat the hell out of Kenny and Pat was her favorite. Does anyone remember when the dog came into Mass and peed on Monsignor Doyle? Just finished reading all the comments. Lots of people remember a lot of things from the past. Remember George's variety on Bowdoin-near St. Pete's or Chrisite's on the corner of Winter and Bowdoin. George watched every move you made and yelled all the time. Went to Edward Southward, Mather, Girl's Latin (for one term) then to the Grover and then onto Jeremiah E. Burke High School for Girls. Someone should get Billie Bratton for defamation of charactor on the Parksmen. They weren't that bad...famous for hiding in the trees while the police sped up Adams St. Like they couldn't see or hear them coming. Many memories in the park and church yard. Does anyone remember the Strawberry Festivals in the Church yard? or the hula hoop contest? or the ice skating rink they made (bumpy but fun)? sledding down the hill into the wrought iron fence? buying 2 cases of beer-one for the group and the other for the police officer and firemen? I'll stop now...too many to write. Thanks for the trips down memory lane.

Or if you went to the Mather School and went to religious class at St. Peter's on Tuesday afternoons. A parade of kids through the park. The sprinklers near the Mather when it was hotter than heck. Anyone go to day camp at the Dot House back in the 60s? Great pics on the site. Caught Jack O'Riordan and Brian McDonough....worked with them back when we were younger....on Bowdoin Street.

Wow,I had a good laugh. I hadn't thought about the rubbing of our fingers across out teeth in front of the Chinese cleaners. I lived on Norton Street but moved to Maine in '69. Does anyone remember "Bob" the guy in the ice cream truck that came around every summer evening? Also, the "whip" truck. We would pay a dime for a ride. I would go to Jacks to buy my mom's cigs and occasionally to Watson's for groceries. I remember buying my "punks" at the 5 and 10.

Since the LaBollita girls want to get "old" i may as well join them: you know your old if: you were a pinboy at St. Peters ronan hall bowling alley, shopped at the First National market across from the church, watched them tear down Lyceum Hall next to the fire house and finally enough about Billy Bratton who never left Hecla street and is just writing lies about any- one who hung up the little park which it was called in the 50's. Also how about the great Christmas tree bonfire in the little park in the mid fifties, never seen another one like it since.

Actually, Petey-Anne's and the Hilltop were two seperate bakeries. Petey's was next to the old First National and the Hilltop was across the street near the Horsehoe. Hilltop had the best birthday cakes ever and burned down or the oven blew up in the mid sixties ( I think).

My best friend Diane and I were a little younger than the "boys" we had crushes on (about 4 yrs) but we remember them like it was yesterday-(okay it was actually 1971-1975 or so) Okie, jesse, artie, kevin, john, jack steve etc- we would walk by all hours of the day where you guys were hanging on the wall or down in the lower park just to see you and hope you would see us- (of course we were nothing to see at the time all flat chested and geeky) but one could only hope..... I went to CCD at St peters- hung out at Petey-Annes when not "attending" church- did "business" with Steve Doyle from his perch on the ice cream chest in Joe's Variety on Topliff St- obsessed over the "older" guys, concerts at the Orpheum, who had a car that night we could ride around in, whose house we could crash in, waiting for Jimmy Adduci to come down Longfellow st on his bike and maybe get a spin around the block, - and waited patiently for Bill Murphy and his dog Nestorenko (sp?)to come walking by- grew up and dated him for awhile- turned out to be a great guy- also fulfilled another unrequited love interest won't mention any names but "reminds me of a cross between Pierce Brosan and Peter Jennings" proved all that I hoped for and more- he also turned out very well- just not with me ha ha- The music of that time is still such a huge connection for me as well- I hope the band can measure up- Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, Mott the Hoople, Yes, Three Dog Night, Jackson Brown, ELP, and Jethro Tull- wow i can actually feel the gray hairs growing- I lived all the way at the other end of Holmes ave- over geneva ave over Bowdoin on Bullard St had my communion at St peters and my confirmation- went to the John Marshall- Grover Cleveland and Dot High- starting hanging around the "corner" at 12-13- learned alot of very valuable life lessons from some of the older crowd- how to flirt, how to smoke-everything- how to drive- how not to go to school on a really day- oh wait I taught Diane how to do that-ha ha-I've ahd a smile on my face all day since Diane called to tell me about the reunion- I guess it was a pretty good childhood after all- mad

Where are all the people from SPS, Class of '71? I know we're turning 50 this year, but I still remember the "whip" on Norton St., and "Bob," the ice-cream truck driver. How could anybody ever forget "Ernie's." His food was the best around, and when we had a half day from St. Peter's, we had to wait to get a table to eat our lunch. Meatball sub, french fries, and a coke from the coke machine, all for $1.00. Oh yeah, messing with the people at the chinese laundry brought back a bunch of laughs too. Can't wait to see how all the guys I had a crush on, are aging. This is terrible, but I remember opening the door to Lang & Moore, reaching my hand into the candy counter, and stealing whatever I grabbed first. The nuns would be appalled. Hi Rita!!!!!

You might want to add this link <http://old-picture.com/europe/Dorchester-General-England-view.htm> to the others on your website. It is a photo of Dorchester in Dorset England (Thomas Hardy country). Two years ago my wife and I were driving in the area and came upon Dorchester. We were delighted to walk up the High Street and find, at the top, St Peter's Church where we had a great conversation with the Dorchester Town Crier, who is very familiar with Dorchester, MA. He got a real kick out of hearing that we were married in St Peter's Church in 1957. In the photo, St Peter's is prominent in the center on the top of the hill.

I've just read all of the comments, and I didn't see any names that I remember. It's probably a comment on my leaking 60 year old's memory. I lived at 25 Hamilton St. Graduated from St Peter's Class of 1961 (which reads the same if you turn it upside down...we got pins with the year). My picture is actually posted on this site's photo album. I'm the tallest kid in the back row of the graduating class of 61. I don't remember being that ugly - I've gotten better looking with age. I ate coconut donuts at Joseph's while pretending to be at Mass. I bounced on the trampolines at the Flip and Flop (is that the right name? Flip/Flop?) I drank beer at Ronan Park...in the snow...sitting on a bench. I could sometimes pass for 21 (at 14) and bought beer and cheap wine for the crowd. Phony bleached birth certificate worked...did the clerks really care back then? Does anyone remember hanging out at the little store on the corner of Bellevue and Barry Streets in the early 60s? I forget the name of the store. I've sent a couple of early pictures for the photo album/CD.

The name of the corner store at Bellevue & Barry was just Sam's. Try to find an Orange Crush by hanging over the top on your belly and pulling up all Coke's. Sam used to yell at us for keeping open the top open too long. We settled for cokes for a nickel. By the way, the girls in the picture at St. Peter's are not the Labollita girls. They are from l to r, Merry Parker, Patrice McInnis and Mary D'Agostino, circa 1976-77.

It's wonderful to read all of the comments. Congratulations to the folks who initiated this website!!! However, am realizing that after all of these years life went on after I left St. Peters & Meeting House Hill. You younger folks had almost as much fun as we did. I'm from the class of 1951. Lived close to the corner of Homes & Topliff. (The corner store was "Louis Kisner's" in those days). We're turning 70 this year. Wouldn't it be great to have a table?

The run would start at the top of holmes ave and end at the benji, wow were we in great shape. How i miss those times and how close we all were. Hanging in the tennis courts watching the boys play basketball and street hockey against the price brothers from bellevue. Lighting the barrels on fire to stay warm in the winter. The kids today have nothing on us, computers, ipods, cell phones, video games. Who needs em! I do how else will i know where my sons are. Dennis Kane I know you are on this website and you are a trouble maker Luv ya! Jane lets do lunch? Luv ya miss ya see you soon Hi, everybody see you at the reunion. Reading with interest all the "old places" and us oldies trying to remember the exact name. Does anyone remember the store on Adam's street that was so small one person was a crowd. It was below a house on the right hand side coming from Donovan's Park. I can visualize the store and the owner but can't remember if it actually had a name. Also someone mentioned "Charlie" Brown a few emails back. He was a classic-I remember once when they were playing football on Parish St with the firemen...after midnight..and some one call the cops. Everyone stopped but Charlie-he had had a few too many brews and too much lip to the cops. Mrs. Brown didn't need to be called to pick him up because she was already there picking up another son. What a night for the Brown family. Well got to go and take a nap...old age gives us the right to nap after we wake up. See you soon

Hi Rita, of course I remember you. I'm going to try and scan my St. Peters class pictures this weekend and send them in. Are you going to the reunion? My daughter is friends with Lorraine Ryan's son and she's getting me Lorraine's phone number so I can get in touch with her.

it was watsons on bowdion st. there was also brothers market with the mother/brother with the funky hairdos and long nails and fitzy worked there. Also I do remember the little store on adams street, but I can't remember the name. What about the mighty midget on bowdion street, boy did they make a lot a money off the kids from the park. I remember the big kids, chuckie mann, sage, morris and those guys giving wedges to cocker & them. Until one day they gave Paul ryan or someone a wedge so bad they ripped his underwear out and hung it on the flag pole. Does anyone remember the 2 cops on horses Ed dooley and Walter? Ed dooley is dead now God rest his sole and Walter rode applejack and one night he was so drunk he fell off his horse. Sad but funnnnny!

In photo gallery 3, the picture titled "Bartenders Eddie's", thats Larry "Spike" Bosse on the left. Spike passed away around 1980 or 1981. The guy with Spike is/was Joe McDonald(?) He worked for Jordan MArsh in the Men's dept. I went over the picture of the O'Brien Club with Mike Keany & Jackie O'Sullivan tonight and we figured out most of the guys in the picture.

Dear Old Blimp in 8C. The bell would ring at 12:45, you wouldn't see her until 5 after 1:00. Jake was so busy watching her room, and ours. By the time Blimp got up the stairs, she'd plop in her chair, tell us to read something in our geography book, and fall asleep. I'll never forget the day she was screaming at Tommy Chisholm, and she called him "A BOLD LITTLE IMP!" We never let him live that one down for the rest of the year.

Good ol Blimp. Remember the day she was walking across the street from the convent and had some really important tests and she fell and the tests went flying everywhere and we all were standing at the window cheering. How about when the nuns would have their meetings and she'd tell us to have silent reading and she'd try to sneak up on us through the "cloak room" and the floor would squeak so much we'd hear her coming. Or when she'd call us girls up who had our skirts rolled up and she'd try to roll them down. And who could forget when the church "bells" would ring (out of key because it was a recording) and we'd all start humming. What about the 8C Recipe, which I got caught with. I will be sending that in soon. Then there were the drug classes and she got so pissed at us because we were in hysterics about the letters from Vietnam about the yellow bananas rolling down the road. How about the 8th Grade dance and the snowballs? And how many people do you know who ever had an 8th Grade reunion? But, you know what, those nuns must have done something right because I've checked my spelling and grammer at least 4 times. And yes,I agree with you, Jake was one tough broad! As I've said before, I LOVE THIS SITE! Now gather your things and pass out.

OMG those nuns did me in! 12 years of nuns and I ended up marrying a Jewish guy! no kidding....remember how you had to bring in your 5 cents to buy a Maryknoll magazine, Sister Mary Brady (the singing nun), how we ever bought pickles from those huge barrels at Joe's and we didn't even use gloves--we would stick our arm right into the barrel of pickles yuk, also remember getting those little christmas carol books and the box of candy that looked like a box of animal crackers. ha I remember before Bradlees was there; it was just an open space. Ice skating at town field, Chuck's subs on Dorchester Ave, Going to the Park theater and seeing 2 movies for 25 cents. Ideal TV was on the corner of Bowdoin St. and Norton (I think). I do remember the flip flop--it was a dark place with trampolines and sometimes you would see the mice running around underneath. haha good times

I remember the St. Peters song but I rmember it differently... Oh St. Peters we cheer for you/ You're the sign of our loyalty/Something something about truth and youth/As our hearts grow strong and free/ With our banner of Faith held high/ For all blank we must do or die/ If we base any claim we must honor the name of our dear St. Peters School. By the way, Sister Ann David was the worst nun in the world. That's all I have to say about that. I remember when President Kennedy was shot and all the nuns were crying, all the kids got into it but we really didn't understand it all. I tol
